25 local business owners have recently set up "The Cornmarket area group" (Cornmarket Street, Paul Street, French Church Street, Daunt Square, Castle Street and Careys Lane) they met this week to discuss their concerns regarding anti-social behaviour in and around the above areas. The issues of Garda presence and the poor response times to multiple incidents which have occurred recently has led to the formation of this group whose purpose is to highlight the issues which are not being dealt with in a swift and satisfactory manner.
The group of business owners are concerned that the recent poor portrayal of Cork City centre will have a detrimental long term effect for encouraging footfall not just in the above areas but in the greater city centre.
The groups top priority at the moment is to provide ongoing private security which will liase with local Gardai to create a sense of security for the businesses, their staff involved and the general public,. ie potential customers to the area. This is a huge financial commitment for all the businesses involved. The Group is of the view that ongoing work must be done to deal with these types of behaviour which are having a negative effect on locals and tourists and their enjoyment of visiting all of these areas in City Centre.
