FAI Women’s Amateur Shield last 16
Mullingar Athletic AFC 5-0 Letterkenny Rovers FC
On a beautiful day for football the Mullingar Atletic Women entertained a very good Letterkenny Rovers team.
Both sides took a few mins to settle into the game and it was Letterkenny that nearly opened the scoring.
A good passage of play resulted in a Letterkenny player with the goal at her mercy but luckily fir the home team the chance wasn’t converted.
From that point on Mullingar began to dominate the game.
⚽️ The first goal was all about Karen Hegarty. Latching on to a through ball Karen out paced the defence and played a pass to Bridgie Heslin who slotted home
⚽️ A few minutes later it was 2-0 Fiona Keating this time breaking the lines and setting up Karen Hegarty to beat the keeper from close range.
⚽️ The first half was wrapped up when some nice interchange of passing in midfield gave Fiona Keating to space to play a sublime pass into Karen Hegarty who showed bravery to get there before the defender to make it 3-0
The 2nd half saw Athletic using the ball well, keeping possession and working the opposition.
Mullingar began to stretch the Letterkenny team forcing the keeper into numerous safes and clearances.
⚽️ Fiona Keating got her reward by bagging a goal for herself, beating the offside trap and juggling the ball before putting the ball past the goalkeeper.
Going into the closing stages of the game and with Athletic using all of their subs a from back to front goal put the icing on a very good performance.
⚽️ Aoife Kenny fizzed a pass out to Lauren Power who’s first touch pass set Karen Hegarty free down the right, showing composure Karen found Lilia O’Brien who finished the move off by firing home to make it 5-0 and a FAI 1/4 final to look forward too.
A big thank you to Letterkenny Rovers for making the trip to Mullingar today.
