Many thanks for supporting Green Earth Organics to date, we really appreciate it. Just in case you didn’t know, last Summer we changed egg suppliers from Connolly eggs to a smaller local supplier - John Tedder and his new company Down to Earth organics. John lives less than 10 miles up the road from us in Galway and it was his first time producing organic eggs on a commercial level. Before we decided to take him on as our supplier, we visited his farm and we were delighted with what we saw – you can watch the video below. We have never seen happier birds, they are tame, friendly, highly inquisitive and not at all afraid of humans, this is in stark contrast to how hens in industrial farms are. John’s hens are living as they are supposed to – they're happy and contented with their lot, they can move and enjoy scratching around in the fields cleaning themselves in dust bathes, and really just being free.
Every week John comes to our farm to drop off his eggs, and he brings with him empty two wheelie bins to take away a lot of our waste veg in those bins, the stuff we can’t use ourselves or we can’t send to the charity COPE. You see, John uses this waste veg to feed the hens that produce the eggs. Not only that, but we take back his egg boxes and give them back to him so that he can reuse them. It is an example of as close to a perfectly closed system as you can get. Big business and supermarkets cannot do this, or they don’t as it is not financially viable, or they can’t be bothered or whatever.
John has been supplying us with his eggs now just over six months now and he has been really struggling to make his business viable. At Green Earth Organics, one of our core principles is to pay a fair price to our suppliers as it is the right thing to do and we are in it for the long haul – supporting smaller local businesses and local jobs. As a result, we have agreed to help support him as we realise how hard it is for a small business to cover its costs. As a nation we are very vulnerable to external market forces such as recent currency fluctuations and the resulting impact on the price of certified organic feed which comes in from abroad. We have decided to increase the price of his eggs from €2.95 to €3.15 and the €0.20 difference will be passed onto him directly to help him to grow his business and to make it a success.
Online customer: If you order online - you will notice the price of the eggs has changed this week from €2.95 to €3.15.
Box scheme customer: If you have John’s organic eggs included as part of your automatic delivery from us, you’ll notice a slightly increased charge on your bank statement from the 1st of February going forward.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for supporting a locally owned, family run Irish business – we really appreciate it.
